Recently, I read an article about how technology may alter our travel memories. We are paying less attention to our surroundings and attention to our devices because there are just so many things happening that we need to catch up. However, is there any way that my technology can help me with the memory of my trip, which I could never do in the first place? What are some alternative methods to document a new journey?
For this project, I took a trip to New Orleans for six days and tracked down sounds or pieces of music that got my attention. After coming back from the trip, I gather together all the data and analysis of their characters. Because each sound contains a fair amount of interesting personalities, I decided to create 4 separate graphics.

The hardest part of this project is how I can capture these sounds. I used three tools in total: Voice recorder, Videos, and Shazam.
Voice demo is to capture all small and quick sounds. When we cannot control when these sounds appear, I need a tool to access and easy to use. It also has many downsides such as the fuzzy quality, and it doesn't track down my location. I need to manually write down the name of the street where the sound happened.
I video recorded most of the street artists. It gives me better sound qualities and images. Of course, because iPhone likes to track down your location, you can easily find the event's exact location. I mostly used Shazam when a song is playing in the background through radios or speakers. Since I have nothing to capture, I would just Shazam them and find the source.

Besides, ︎
The iPhone's location pinning system is meticulous when listing where the events happened, detailed to street numbers.
Because capturing the sounds is the first step of the entire project, it became extremely crucial to document as much information as possible. Although it takes the entire six days to record all the sound, the action didn't interfere with me enjoying the city, which surprised me.
I also took one photo of my shoes each time I captured a sound.

Above are twenty music index cards with Spotify codes on them. You can listen to them by scanning using the Spotify camera.
I also included them into a Spotify playlist. If you are also interested in this experience, listen to the playlist by ︎︎︎Clicking Here

The Interactive Visual Sound Map
How can a trip be completed without a map. I mentioned before, my phone tracked down the exact location of these music hotspots. So I started to ask myself, would it be cool to create a music map featuring all of them! would it be more awesome if this map has sound becasue at the end of the day, this is a map about music.
I mapped out all the location on the Google map by days and combining them into a full map. I built a grid for the city that is totally abstrct because the radius of music is flowy and borderless. Each unit contains the exact music/sound that I recorded when I was in that moment. So what you will hear, is exactly what I heard and experienced during my trip.
